Totty Advent Calendar #2 - Tom Daley

2010 was the year that diver Tom Daley won Commonwealth golds and became legal tender, as it were.

He was the first ever person to win BBC Young Sportsperson of the Year twice and is also on the shortlist for the adult version this year, to be awarded on the 19th.

Cricket Totty - James Anderson in Attitude

Sorry, I've been a bit slow to pick up on this - maybe because it was made public on my birthday on Monday which was also a local holiday.

Anyway, England cricketer has become the latest straight celeb to drop 'em for "Attitude" in their October issue. It accompanies a pro-gay interview.

Of course Anderson already has posed naked with colleagues Stuart Broad and Alastair Cook in "Cosmopolitan".

There definitely seems to be a great change in attitude happening within sport as regards this sort of thing. Possibly generational, as the stars have generally been in their 20s, and also to attract a new audience to their respective sports.

Whether we get to the levels seen in Brazil's G magazine (with straight celebs not only showing off full frontal but getting hard and doing cumshots) is another matter, though full frontal is gaining ground via Dieux du Stade's calendar. Yet to see who's exposing themselves in the 2011 edition.

On a related note. it also appears the Edinburgh rugby team are doing another calendar. Let's hope they have learned from their mistakes in the 2010 one - they are putting in some sort of effort already, as three of them bravely faced Festival crowds and paraded in their pants on the Royal Mile last month, which one of them hinted was calendar related.

Strictly takes off for 2010

I've waited until after yesterday's broadcast of the launch show last night before commenting on the celeb line-up that was revealed on Wednesday morning, so I can cover everything else we know so far.

Have to say I was generally rather perked up by the show last night, though the whole premise of the launch made for some odd, unfamiliar moments. First difference was the absence of the usual 'parade of couples' title sequence, as we were there to witness the coupling happening first-hand. In fact, that was almost all that happened in the show. Even the judges had nothing to do, so it was merely courtesy having them there.

The remainder was mostly made up of set piece numbers by the professionals, now split between competing dancers and a smaller band of resident show dancers. Luckily we had three new competing dancers to be introduced to as well - is it just me who thinks the newbies all look like gay porn stars of various flavours? Robin especially reminds me of Ross Hurston (Google at your own risk), Artem looks like your typical Eastern European muscle-hunk and Jared is the supple, doe-eyed twink. Not to say that detracts any from what seem to be effective performers.

Have to say these made the show for me last night - I'd have been fast-forwarding the pairing up 'reveals' if I'd recorded it. Even if it was meant to be what we were tuning in for I'm not convinced that's a USP and I guessed about half of them (Tina & Jared wrote itself) but was surprised at handicapping Widders further by going for Anton, a partner who towers over her. Usually Vincent gets the short girls! Poor Ola has drawn Paul Daniels, but then she did win last year.

Anyway, here's the show's opening, including a storming set piece by the professionals. Some of it I saw for the first time on this YouTube clip as BBC Scotland (I assume) blacked out several minutes of vision just before it cut to the studio. I'm sure there was a lot of fury at such incompetence.

As I said, not much celeb dancing went on, with the exception of an only slightly practiced group dance right at the end, after the pairings were revealed. Some have noted that this somehow means everyone knew the pairings in advance, but I'm not convinced as this was an organised chaos of partnering off (even the unfortunately captured preview still has Paul and Widders lunging for each other and Scott Maslen can also seen in the embrace of ex-co-star Kara Tointon). I think the dancers will have been told, for obvious preparation reasons, but not the celebs who wouldn't really benefit from knowing. It's not much to go on, but most seem satisfactory in this number. The wobblers I spotted were Widders - who has god given handicaps - and Gavin Henson, who appeared to think it was a conga at a wedding. Widders will be kept in beyond her ability of course. Gavin though seems to be deliberately building a public personna as a bit of a conker-tinted plonker, so that may not be the best for getting an audience lifeline in this show.

Anyway, I checked the betting odds for who'd be this year's champ when the celeb line-up was announced, but before this show taped on Wednesday night so I looked again this morning to see the difference. And there wasn't much actually. I've reproduced them below.

I'm dismayed to see Kara on top there - frankly she shouldn't be there. For one thing she has a strong whiff of 'stand-by' in a year where the show has generally upped its game in casting. It also makes Strictly 2010 too heavy with people who are or have been in "Eastenders" (Scott, Goldie & Jimi being the others) and I suspect the bosses would rather not have done that. More importantly, she's already had a crack at it for Sport Relief, and that should disqualify you I think. So I hope the bookies are wrong there.

No surprise to see ex-gymnast and ready-for-anything Matt Baker as top placed male celeb. He'll also have a wide audience appeal from both "Countryfile" and his "Blue Peter" days. Plus he's 'a very nice man' (and sexy ... if not sitting next to Richard Bacon, Simon Thomas or Gethin Jones) Remains to be seen if he's got rhythm, though his era of BP did involve some musical stunts and he once was a disco dancer of some description . Jimi and Scott will have to have good stamina and attitude to keep up I think, but that's perfectly possible.

Pleased to see Felicity placed so strongly - I hope she makes it to the final in fact. And I'm trusting Bruno that Pamela will also be a dark horse. Those two laydeez were such potent sex-bombs to my generation of telly watchers that even I'm not immune to their charms... and if Pam stays in I can also ogle James ;)

So that's my initial thoughts. I'll probaby be back in three weeks when each of them give us a waltz or a cha-cha. The latter is always a good laugh at the very least, though I hope they give Widders & Anton the waltz first. She's surely experienced enough Tory balls over the years to wing that.

ISTR no-one is being elimated that weekend though, so all the couples get a chance at a ballroom and a latin.

The launch show is on iPlayer until next Saturday night, so obviously not being seen as a part of the series proper.

Cricket Totty - Mohammad Amir

I had set this up before the weekend , when Amir's name has been associated with something less than great but he came to my attention at the end of last week when he was Pakistan's teen sensation against England in a test match. Hopefully he'll come through unscathed.

More Dieux du Stade Hotness!

I seem to have piqued an interest after posting the brothers Evans from the 2010 calendar. Above are three more of the featured Brits, and below is a fabulous summary video covering the making of. The full DVD is available but like the calendar is NOT cheap and is complete with dangly bits!

Edinburgh Rugby 2010 Calendar - a bit of context

In researching the previous post I came across this piece from the team website:

http://www.edinburghrugby.org/content/view/2702/88/

On the one hand it reveals that this project was quite a last minute thing, so kudos to the team for basically getting it all done in just a matter of weeks. However it also reveals that that the inspiration back on October 10th was a match with Stade Francais, who gifted them copies of their infamous calendar. So they DO know how it should be done, but still didn't replicate it. Of course the Stade people don't bother with themes and there's no colour and few clothes either, but only three of the 12 shots really make the grade for a professional team at Edinburgh's level. I suspect there may have been a bit of local rivalry when they discovered that two of the Glasgow Warriors Rugby team (Max and Thom Evans) got their bits in the 2010 DDS calendar (below)

Anyway, had it been me doing the Edinburgh calendar, I'd have had no more than two guys per month, but been a bit more revealing in the shots. For rugby players the shots were surprisingly coy. It might have been:

JANUARY - Mike and David Blair - in contrasting longjohns celebrating with a popping champagne bottle
FEBRUARY - Scott Newlands - reclining naked on a luxury bed with a scattering of chocolates covering his bits
MARCH - Chris Paterson - in wet white pants and t-shirt (ripping open the latter)
APRIL - Ross Ford - tooled up like a handyman in tight denim cut-offs, socks and boots
MAY - Jim Hamilton - all greased up under a car bonnet with dropped overalls and 'distressed' underwear
JUNE - Phil Godman - in cycling lycra on a bike
JULY - Tim Visser and Andrew Easson - playing with supersoaker pistols in their speedoes
AUGUST - Sean Crombie - unzipping biker leathers
SEPTEMBER - Simon Webster - grappling open a dress shirt and bowtie plus black socks and white pants
OCTOBER - John Houston and Roddy Grant - mud wrestling in jockstraps
NOVEMBER - Ross Rennie - kneeling topless in a kilt
DECEMBER - Nick De Luca - in red silk boxers with a white fur trim and a santa hat

And that makes 15 guys appearing which is the size of a rugby squad surely?

What do you think? Should I get the gig for the 2011 calendar?

Rugby Totty Special "the Edinburgh Rugby 2010 calendar

You might recall that the other day I said that this was one of the three calendars I was given for Christmas. On seeing the cover (above) I gasped with delight and was eager to see what wonders of beefcake were inside, especially knowing there is some real talent on the squad ...

I think it was January that made my mind up immediately upon opening it. Someone who doesn't fancy men (and has no concept of 'styling' beyond getting a basic theme) has put this together.

There's just so many things wrong with this shot - the cruellest being that Allan Jacobsen (leftmost) just isn't mainstream pin-up material except to those who really like their bears (his expression seems to agree). Then we come to Greg Laidlaw, not only does the toolbelt over the pants thing cancel itself out, but he's been put between two really big guys and so looks scrawny in comparison. Geoff Cross is a passably mainstream bear-type, but WTF is a doctor doing here? Is it an on-site medical?

Now February isn't so bad, but there's the first appearance of the pointless box-out - not for the last time relegating someone who deserves to be in the main picture (in this case I'd swap Simon Cross on he left for Andrew Easson). John Houston, on the right, could have carried the whole page himself though! Good location effort though.

In March they forget that the emphasis in these calendars should be on the guys - here the table tennis table and the walls take up most of the shot. Mark Robertson and Roddy Grant have kindly stripped to their pants but needn't have bothered as they're not close enough for inspection. And if foregrounded David and Mike Blair had bothered, well it is completely wasted - one of them hasn't even got their face in it!

This one's just unsexy - the only pair of pants we can see this time are Craig Hamilton's. Are the others in their pants or meant to be wearing trousers or nothing? On the left Scott Newlands is actually out of focus and looks podgy. The sunglasses on Andrew Kelly and Alan MacDonald just give them anonymity rather than mystique. And, of course, thee missed the obvious opportunity of a 'strip poker' scenario (which this isn't).

May is just lacking in effort - the only theme I see here is "tea-break" and that might even have been what it was. Being cruel again Davie Young on the right doesn't quite make the grade and the hat just makes him stand out more. Kyle Traynor and Sean Crombie are fine, but ought to have been better used.

Now June's main shot of David Callum is fine and would have sufficed - they even resisted the temptation to have him in his pants, which would be unnecessary and a bit naff. However the box-out presents us with what I consider the cardinal sin of this calendar by relegating the magnificent hunk of man that is Simon Webster (third from left) to a bit part. He doesn't appear anywhere else either! I'd have liked more of the other two in the box-out (Ross Samson and Andrew Turnbull) too but that's your lot of them as well.

The 'hey, we're in a band' theme is a bit desperate and 'guitarists' Ryan Grant and Steve Jones are again a wee bit out of focus. 'Drummer' Jim Hamilton steals the show her, despite being hidden behind his kit. He even has the Maggie's charity tattooed across his chest. Scott Macleod's hair doesn't quite fit with a rock band (or for a rugby player come to think of it).

All of a sudden though we have three months where they basically get it right. August has even been styled in blue light - dunno why but it looks good as do Nick De Luca and Ross Rennie.

September is 'all-stars' I'd say with three Scotland players featured on the golf course - Phil Godman, Allister Hogg ad Chris Paterson . This one has just the right balance of humour and bare flesh (and exposed pantage - thanks Phil!) for the subject.

This one's my favourite - the only thing I might point out is the shot of buildings in the background which slightly spoils the rural air of the shot. I'm also not sure if there's a significance in that the guy with the biggest dog has the most clothes off. Anyway, the dog-walking beauties here are Ross Ford, Tim Visser and Ben Cairns.

This one is June all over again - a main shot (Fraser McKenzie) that would have sufficed spoiled by an overly comic box-out in the bath. With Fraser are Steve Turnbull (leftmost) and (in the 'hilarious' sporran) Jim Thompson.

Just a basic 'too many cooks' error this one - I think four or five guys would do, not seven. Those seven are Mark Robertson, Andrew Easson, Scott Newlands (proving how badly represented he was in March), Tim Visser, Steve Turnbull, Roddy Grant and Jim "Sporran-Boy" Thompson. Notably, all are reappearances in the calendar.
